Professional title for a Practicing Psychologist: Registered Psychologist (this shows the minimum level of competence. With additional training psychologists register as specialists in clinical, educational, community, etc.)

Criteria, Regulations and Procedures to obtain a License:

  • Supervised Training; qualifications, experience criteria all specified in NZ regulations and Act. Compliance with Health Practitioners competence assurance Act.
  • Registered Psychologist – A minimum of a Master’s degree in Psychology from an accredited educational organization, or an equivalent qualification. Eligibility for a general scope of practice requires a Board approved practicum or internship involving 1500 hours of supervised practice.
  • Specialist Scope (Clinical, educational, etc.) – A minimum of a Master’s degree in Psychology from an accredited educational organization and an accredited [specialist qualification entered here], or equivalent qualification. Eligibility for a [name of specialist scope entered here] Psychologist scope of practice shall require a Board approved practicum or internship involving 1500 hours of supervised practice.

Reciprocity of Licenses: There is a reciprocal agreement with Australia that allows registration in each country. Others are approved on a case-by-case basis on the grounds of “substantial equivalence” of qualifications, training and experience.  In New Zealand (we have a trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement between NZ and Australia which means if I am registered in NZ I can also work in Australia).
