Michele D. Ribeiro completed her doctorate in counseling psychology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey with a focus on multicultural counseling in 2005 and her masters in counseling at Indiana State University in 1994. In between, her interest in global psychology and social identities related to race, ethnicity, culture, language, SES, sexual orientation, gender, and ability took root. During these years she spent significant time exploring mindful living through sojourns, spiritual pilgrimages, and examining what it means to be White and from the U.S. in Southeast Asia, India, and Nepal. Later scholarship involved examining social identities within the context of South Africa and more recently participating in two APA International Learning Partner Programs in Cuba and Tanzania. At the core of her passion is culture and community and she brings this into other ventures including teaching group psychotherapy at George Fox University; leading trainings through PESI on mindfulness, yoga, and mental health; and serving as a visiting instructor for Zanzibar University in Tanzania. She is board certified in group psychology, a fellow with the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) and currently serves on the board for Division 49 (Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy) as the APA Council Representative. She has previously served on the boards for AGPA and Division 52 (International Psychology) as secretary. She has published two (co)edited books entitled: The College Counselor’s Guide to Group Psychotherapy (2018) and Examining Social Identities and Diversity Issues in Group Therapy: Knocking at the Boundaries (2020) through Routledge Press.
