Chartered Psychologist

Criteria, Regulations and Procedures to obtain a License:

The UK requires a BPS accredited postgraduate degree and chartership with the British Psychological Society.

For UK applicants:

  1. Must have achieved at least a 2:2 on an undergraduate honors degree (recognised as meeting Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership) or have completed a society-accredited conversion qualification
  2. One of the following three options:
    1. have undertaken society-accredited postgraduate qualifications and training
    2. have appropriate postgraduate training and experience of teaching psychology have completed psychology research to doctoral level

For Non-UK Applicants: There are two routes available for non-UK applicants to apply.

Route 1 – Traditional Study

Applicants must:

  • Hold a qualification, or a combination of qualifications, which provide eligibility for GBC
  • Hold an additional postgraduate qualification in psychology at least equivalent to a UK masters degree
  • Have relevant supervised training and experience undertaken outside the UK equivalent to UK professional doctorate level

Route 2 – Teaching/Research

Applicants must:

  • Hold a qualification, or a combination of qualifications, which provide eligibility for GBC
  • Have appropriate postgraduate training and experience of teaching psychology
  • Or have completed psychology research to doctoral level

Reciprocity of Licenses:

Overseas psychologists from any country in the world can register with the HCPC in the UK and use the protected ‘practitioner psychologist’ titles such as clinical psychologist or counseling psychologist, thus qualifying them to practice in the UK (as per https://www.imgconnect.co.uk/news/2020/06/hcpc-route-to-the-uk-a-guide-for-overseas-%20psychologists/76) .
